Diesel Spill in Greene County – Raises Questions

Environmental Protection Agency LogoA diesel fuel spill recently occurred in Greene County that caused some eyebrows to raise.   The state is currently investigating a Pittsburgh-based Marcellus shale drilling company when it spilled 480 gallons of diesel fuel in Center Township last December.

John Poister, a spokesperson for the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) states the spill occurred when diesel fuel was being transported out of a temporary fuel tank.   While a worker was emptying fuel from his tank, he did not realize it was leaking.

Word of the spill is just coming out right now as the DEP is not required to notify the public.  However, the responsibility lies in the hands of the gas company – in which they are to notify the DEP.  The gas company chose not to notify the DEP.

Officials said they should have been notified by either the DEP or the gas company – neither of which happened.  “The township and the fire department should have been notified of that in case it was a problem,” said Edward “Butch” Deter, chairman of the township’s board of supervisors.

Most of the spill was cleaned within 24 hours and anytime there is a contamination of a high quality waterway, it is taken very seriously.  The DEP began the investigation and has issued the gas company a notice of violation.  A fine will more than likely be presented to the gas company for this violation.
