Safety Management Systems, a division of Acadian and one of the largest health, safety, environmental, medical, and training service companies in the United States, is partnering with Mansfield University in Pennsylvania for a new program.
The Marcellus Institute was recently launched at Mansfield University to create community outreach programs and to assist with the development of two new degrees that are focused on the expanding shale gas industry:
- Safety Management Bachelor of Science: This program is offered through the university’s health sciences department and integrates the health and human perspectives with the technical and applied sciences appropriate to the safety science discipline.
- Natural Gas Production & Services Applied Associates of Science: This program is offered through the university’s geography and geology department and will prepare students for a variety of career paths in the natural gas industry and its associated well service providers. Students enrolled in this program enroll in one of five concentrations: permitting and inspection, mudlogging/geologic technician, GIS technician, environmental technician and safety management.
SMS has developed an internship for Mansfield University students which will allow them to advance their knowledge and practical skills. Students will be able to travel with current SMS safety technicians to working locations and get hands-on training and work experience in real settings. Dr. Lee Stocks, a new faculty member at Mansfield, spent two weeks this summer at SMS’ Lafayette, Louisiana, training center so that he could experience the same training that the safety techs have to go through.
“Being able to offer hands-on experience through the internship program with SMS will be invaluable to Mansfield University students,” said Lindsey Sikorski, interim director of the Marcellus Institute at Mansfield University. “Our goal is to educate both students and community members for the job opportunities available within the natural gas industry with companies like SMS.”
“SMS is excited to have the privilege to support Mansfield University and their Marcellus Institute in developing tomorrow’s safety professionals,” says Safety Management Systems’ President Scott Domingue. “We are proud to be an industry partner with a university that shares the mutual goal of developing and maintaining a well-qualified workforce in the flourishing Marcellus shale/gas region and beyond.”
