Shale Gas Plays Role in Erie, PA

Erie County will soon reap many beneftis from shale drilling.

Erie County will soon begin reaping the advantages of the recent shale gas boom that has taken over Pennsylvania.  The residents in Erie County currently sit atop two major gas producing rock formations including the Marcellus Shale and Utica Shale.

In this specific region of Erie, gas reserves within the Utica Shale are thought to be more plentiful.

Though predicted to produce a vast amount of natural gas, no timetable has been developed for when drilling will begin.

It is only a matter of time before drilling begins in this area.  Kathryn Klaber, president of the Marcellus Shale Coalition, an industry group with more than 300 members, predicts that the numbers in the area will increase at a rapid rate.  “Erie already has this strong manufacturing tradition and this will be an opportunity to help businesses understand how to unlock the supply chain.”

According to the Department of Environmental Protection, areas close by have already begun to gain permits for wells.  To date, 74 shale wells have been permitted in Clarion County, 179 in Elk County, and 211 in Potter County.

The drilling spurt is also expected to bring many jobs to the area – which will have an overall boost on the economy.
