The drilling of Marcellus Shale could be a huge potential benefit to the energy world as it is a source of natural gas. This gas has the ability to power our schools, homes, and cars. There are also many environmental scares such as water contamination from the drilling. This raises the question, “What are the pros and cons of drilling Marcellus Shale and should drillers continue with their mission?”
Marcellus Shale is much cleaner for the air than other fossil fuels and the drilling should prove to be helpful to our economy. Along with bringing energy, drilling also has the opportunity to bring many jobs and new workers to surrounding areas. Farmers can also benefit from the drilling as they can lease out their land for money.
Other people believe that the drilling can have many negative effects on the community – harming the water and air. Drinking water has the potential to be contaminated due to drilling materials including chemicals. It has not been proven that drilling directly effects water, but many signs are pointing in this direction.
Are the potential dangers to our health enough to stop the drilling? Or will drilling continue to commence due to the benefit the additional energy and jobs it can provide to communities?
