HARRISBURG – A long-sought goal of providing dedicated revenue to improve rail lines and airports is achieved under the $2.3 billion transportation law signed Monday by Gov. Tom Corbett.
A portion of the revenue can go to upgrade rail freight lines that serve the Marcellus Shale drilling regions, said Transportation Department spokeswoman Erin Waters.
Projects to improve ports, waterways and hiking and biking trails will also get grants from this pot.
The law establishes a “Multi-modal Transportation Fund” built with money from fee increases, a share of revenue from lifting the cap on a state wholesale tax on gasoline and a transfer from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.
